Are you an accounting intern or graduate who’s sizing up prospective employers to see who’s the best fit?

International student job search platform Prosple has recently changed its New Zealand ranking system, which enables students to see how working graduates have ranked their employers across different categories. Here’s how we fared compared to other New Zealand accounting and advisory firms...
1st Best Training and Development
2nd Best Workplaces (this focuses on quality of experience)
2nd Best Career Progression
2nd Best Culture
2nd Best Meaningful Work
3rd Best Sustainability
3rd Best Work-Life Balance
4th Best Diversity and Inclusion
We also currently have a 4.3 rating from our graduate reviews, which is one of the best among accounting and advisory employers. “We’re always mindful of trying to be the best employer we can be,” says Chris Wright, Baker Tilly Staples Rodway Auckland head of people and culture, in response to the new rankings (find out more here).
“For example, we measure our culture every two years to see what we’re doing well and where we can improve. We also provide excellent professional development and the sort of training that you need to achieve your goals and progress your career.”
There were two other categories in the Prosple results – Most Popular, whereby students gravitated towards the better-known Big Four firms (we placed sixth), and Highest Paying – taken from the maximum grad salary in employer job posts on Prosple at the time. We weren’t far behind and our Graduate Programme maximum salary (February 2027 intake, open for pre-registration) is now equal-highest among the current job listings.
We believe our network hits the sweet spot. We’re a member of Baker Tilly International – a global Top Ten professional services network – and our national Baker Tilly Staples Rodway network comprises eight offices in seven regions, offering collaboration and support.
Additionally, our offices are all locally owned, with a great deal of autonomy and thriving roots in their own communities. Our grads aren’t a tiny cog in a large wheel, they’re an integral part of a local team.
Regarding work-life balance, like all accounting and business advisory firms, we work hard and have our busy periods, but we’re also very fair when it comes to enabling you to fulfil personal obligations and conduct your own lives around work. The feedback is that our culture is less stressful than that at some large firms.
Many of our grads have ended up becoming our managers, partners and directors. “That really shows that we support our own,” says Baker Tilly Staples Rodway national chair David Searle. “We invest in our staff and they have very successful careers because of that.”
Additionally, our work is varied, meaningful and interesting. We want our people to grow, learn; and diversify when they want that and where the opportunity exists. It keeps the work fresh, interesting and rewarding.
There are many reasons to work for us, among them the wealth of experience we offer to younger team members. We recognise that you are the way forward in a new era of emerging technologies. Our people are our future. “If you put in that extra effort, you ask questions and you’re enthusiastic, we’ve got plenty of examples where others before you have come to our organisation and excelled,” says David.
If you’re interested in joining our team, you’re welcome to sign up to our grads and interns newsletter. In doing so, you’ll be among the first to hear about our upcoming positions and news that we think might be relevant to you.
Applications to our grad and intern programmes will reopen around March to April next year. Finally, you can read our testimonials or watch this video to see for yourself how our graduates feel about working for Baker Tilly Staples Rodway.
