Sybrand joined Baker Tilly Staples Rodway Tauranga in 2013 as a senior tax manager having spent two years with Baker Tilly Staples Rodway in Christchurch. Sybrand enjoys advising a large range of clients. He also advises accounting and law firms in need of specialist tax advice, and a number of charitable organisations.
Sybrand's prior roles include: Four years with big 4 accounting practices (including 2 years spent in the Channel Islands, UK); Three years with Christchurch law firms specialising in taxation; and Three years as a policy analyst advising the Government on Tax Policy working for the Inland Revenue Department.
International tax issues - in-bound and out-bound investment, including foreign investment funds, foreign superannuation, controlled foreign companies, interpretation of tax treaties, and the application of non-resident withholding tax;
Tax issues that arise from individuals migrating to or from New Zealand;
General business tax issues;
Goods and Services Tax issues - especially issues with buying and selling land;
Look through companies or LTCs - technical tax opinions and advice; and
Tax policy assistance - having worked in IRD Policy, Sybrand understands how to lobby on his clients' behalf.

Master of Laws (LLM) with first class honours - Victoria University of Wellington;
Past member of the New Zealand Law Society Taxation Committee; and
Advanced Diploma in International Taxation - Chartered Institute of Taxation UK.
