A handy list of business tasks to complete before the holidays

Greetings, business owners. Do you have a handy task list ready to complete before the end of the year? If not, here are some ideas to give you a great head start for 2024 and help with good representation of your business brand over the holiday break.

Time to read: 3 mins

Business basics

  • Review the books and set financial goals for next year. You can use software tools like Xero, MYOB or Figured to generate reports and track your cash flow.
  • Plan your inventory and orders for the holiday season and new year. You can use Ecommerce tools to manage your online sales, run a stocktake or track your in-person sales. Also remember to include branded collateral, for example, business cards and clothing.
  • Check your internal systems and processes, and make sure everything is compliant and operating efficiently, and any risks are identified.
  • Schedule your staff and payroll for the holiday period and new year. Ensure you’re up to speed with holiday pay legislation and your obligations as an employer.
  • Back up your data and files to a secure cloud storage service to help prevent data loss and ensure business continuity in case of cyber/digital emergencies.
  • Book in a time to chat with our business advisory team in 2024, we’re here to help you succeed, grow, develop, and make your business goals a reality.

Look after your brand

  • Evaluate your marketing strategy and whether your campaigns and channels are effective. Check that your marketing goals and budget align with your business plan. Good marketing takes time and effort, and the smallest things can affect how people feel about your brand and doing business with you.
  • Update your website and social/digital media channels with differing holiday hours and any promotions or announcements.
  • Update your Google Business Manager profile with closing and reopening dates
  • Clean your sign-written company vehicles if they’re parked somewhere visible or in use over the holiday break
  • Give your physical signage a once over – make a note if it needs refreshing in the new year, and clean your windows etc.

Relax and recharge

  • Reward yourself and your team for all your hard work this year. Hold that end-of-year BBQ/party/Secret Santa, and let your team know how awesome they are.
  • Take some well-deserved time off (if you can) and enjoy downtime with family and friends.

Don't forget to...

  • Turn on your “out of office” email message and change your Teams status to display the dates you’ll be away. Also update/change your voicemail if relevant.
  • Clean and organise your workspace(s) to create a fresh and productive environment for the new year.
  • Make a note in your calendar to update your Google profile, social media, website and voicemail to show you’re open for business after you’ve returned to work.

Lastly, remember that we are here to help with your business needs, from tax and business advisory, to auditing, HR and most everything between. Happy pre-holiday planning – may you and your business prosper as you sail out of 2023 and into 2024!
